Climate Change Solutions

24th-25th May, Birmingham

Earlier this year, scientists advised us that swifter action may be needed if we are to avoid the impact of dangerous climate change. Fuel Cell Power is taking part in the meeting in Birmingham next week which will bring together decision makers in order to progress climate change solutions. Representatives from central and local Government, global companies and UK industry, financiers and insurers, are all contributing to this important meeting to find and pursue the most effective measures, particularly energy conservation and the substitution of fossil fuels with renewables.

Energy in buildings

An important means of energy conservation would be to stem the heat losses from buildings. The conference will examine the economic and technical viability of implementing the proposed Sustainable Buildings Code.

Electricity generation

Major energy losses are incurred when electricity is centrally generated and it is not economic to transport the heat produced. Several presentations will cover the role of combined heat and power, from large scale systems to micro CHP systems powered by small fuel cells.

Transport

Several Motor manufacturers have worked for years to achieve the current success with hydrogen and fuel cell powered vehicles. In view of the urgency of the problem of climate change, how soon can they bring forward their programmes with hydrogen and fuel cell powered vehicles?

Fuel infrastructure

Both in the UK and throughout the world there has been rapid progress with the hydrogen infrastructure, with new developments in the Tees Valley and the Welsh Vales. Following the successful evaluation of hydrogen fuel cell buses, new plans for London will be announced. Motor manufacturers and fuel suppliers have contributed to the development of hydrogen refuelling stations which could presage the near term introduction of hydrogen powered vehicles, initially in urban fleets.

Renewable energy will be obtained from a variety of sources and will increasingly be used for the production of hydrogen. Transport fuels will also be obtained from energy crops and waste.

The Business perspective

New opportunities are opening up and several UK based companies will outline progress with fuel cells. Experts from around the world will give presentations on the latest developments.

Looking from another perspective, what is the risk for business if no action is taken to halt the increase in global warming gases or to mitigate the damage caused? Bankers, insurers and environmental lawyers assess what needs to be done.
